The up-and-coming young German manufacturer celebrates its 10th anniversary with a spectacular limited edition watch that’s now available at Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons
Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons began working with the world’s finest watch companies almost 70 years ago, which means that when those companies produce highly sought-after limited editions, we’re able to bring them to our customers first. One such rarity is the Moritz Grossmann BENU Anniversary ‘Lost in Space’, an exquisite limited-edition piece now available at Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons.
Before we look at the watch, first a reminder of Moritz Grossmann’s charming backstory.
Moritz Grossmann was a 19th century German watchmaker based in the small mountain town of Glashütte in Saxony, where he made high-quality pocket watches. While he’s recognised as one of the co-founders of Glashütte as Germany’s watchmaking epicentre, little of his legacy endured through the 20th century.
After the war, the Soviets took control of Glashütte’s watch production, appropriating the likes of A. Lange & Söhne and greatly reducing the town’s position as a centre of excellence. But since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany in 1990, Glashütte has been revived. In the last 30 years, many companies denuded by the defunct regime have been restored to and even surpassed their former glories. Glashütte is once again recognised as a hub for high-end, low-volume watch manufacturers.
It’s into this lofty category that Moritz Grossmann fits. It was founded in 2008 by Christine Hutter,an ambitious former Lange watchmaker. It made its first watch in 2010 and still now only produces around 500 pieces a year. This volume isn’t dictated by demand but by capacity – each piece is exquisitely finished by hand using traditional methods.
